The fact that Bill makes it so clear his problem with Deb has nothing to do with the fact that his daughter is dating a girl like… made my heart so happy. His dislike of Deb is for all the reasons parents worry about anybody you date. Reasons I’ve seen in countless movies brought up over a girl’s boyfriend.
It feels like it just so easily normalized gay relationships, even as a teen, which is honestly fantastic because queer teens deserve to have all those weird, silly, heartbreaking romantic experiences in high school just like everybody else. It affirms that there’s nothing inherently adult about being gay.
I think we all kind of knew this in seeing Alice and Deb’s relationship, but I don’t think anybody’s said it out loud. It was just really… nice. Incredibly refreshing.
